Dear Parents,
SCHOOL TRIP TO CERN
Two years ago we tried, but failed, to arrange a school trip to CERN, Europe’s Organization for Nuclear Research, on the Swiss–French border. We did not hide our disappointment. Even though we fully appreciated that it was an expensive school trip (Geneva is not a cheap city to visit) we firmly believed, and still do, that a visit to CERN is a once-in-a-lifetime experience of untold educational value.
This is such a popular destination for educational visits that bookings have to be made at least 6 months in advance, and the earliest convenient date we have secured is in early December, 2008. At CERN, groups are usually allowed to visit one of the three main experimental areas, and the visit lasts between 3 and 4 four hours. (The three experimental areas are the Large Hadron Collider, The Antimatter Factory and the Proton Synchroton – please visit www.cern.ch.) We have managed to book a DOUBLE VISIT, which means that we will have the privilege of visiting TWO of the three experimental areas in a FULL DAY guided visit.
We envisage a 4 day/3 night trip. Day 1 we will travel to Geneva. Day 2 will be the day at CERN. Day 3 will be a full day tour of Geneva and Lausanne (since we have gone all that way) and day 4 will be the return journey. The cost will be around the €1000 mark, if we manage to attract about 15 pupils.
In order to proceed with our arrangements and to guarantee that everything goes according to plan, we are asking you to commit yourselves financially, if you are interested in your daughter/son/ward visiting CERN. We should like a deposit of € 200 by Friday 12 October, payable to the Registrar, Ms. E. Naoum. If we have sufficient positive response, the trip will take place and we will inform you in good time and at regular intervals of all necessary details. If the response is not sufficient to justify the trip, your € 200 will be immediately returned.
We look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
